Students in grade 5 attend computer class for 40 minutes four times per week. Both 5A and 5B are combined for computer class. They are in the computer lab fourth period on Monday and Tuesday. On Friday the fifth grade has computers period four and period eight. On Tuesday, students spend the forty minutes working on Aleks for their math class. This allows students some in school class time to complete their math class requirements. Aleks is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system that uses adaptive questioning to determine what a student knows and doesn't know in a math course. Fifth grade students continue to use the file mangement techniques that they have learned in the previous years. Files and folders are saved in their home directories on the server. Student's keyboarding skills continue to build as they start to work on increasing their keyboarding speed. The first part of each class on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is dedicated to improving the student's keyboarding skills. Students learn to use PowerPoint this year. Work done in Social Studies class is used as the content. Students practice speaking in front of the class as they use their PowerPoint project as a tool for the presentation. Word-processing skills are used throughout the year as students complete assignments in computer class for their subject area teachers. Students also learn desktop publishing skills. Students continue to refine internet search techniques as they research using the internet and encyclopedia software. Students use the internet in computer class to research topics for their subject area classes. Students learn how to determine if a website is a credible source. Internet safety concepts are stressed.
